My digital foot. That right there confused me so much at the beginning of this process. What actually is it? How come I never thought of it before? Pre-assignment I had never realized that what I put on the internet can be accessed by anyone that is looking. From my Facebook, to my Twitter, to the site I made in grade 10, everything is up for the world to see by just a click of the mouse.

In step one of this assignment, we were asked to search for our name on different search engines to gather data on our digital foot print and what they says about us.

Here is the actual post that I created in response: https://evinlachance.wordpress.com/2010/09/15/digital-footprint/

To just some up the post I began by entering my name in Google, 123people, and Pipl. Then from that I got a sense of who I am on the internet. From what I learned about my footprint, was that my footprint was made mostly of leisure actions preformed on the web (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace), and on occasion an article would appear about my extra-circular life (volunteering and school). Overall I was happy with what I saw, I appeared top on the list, and none of my links were incredibly embarrassing or self-damaging. Due to this step I learned about what a digital footprint actually was, and what was good and bad in it. This allowed me to judge it.

Within the same post we were also asked, “ would you want an employer or teacher to see that? what do you want it to show and say?” I replied by saying this: “I would not want an employer or teacher to see it. I feel that I need time to develop my digital footprint, and at this state I have more social leisure links than professional ones. If a person were to search for me I would rather have more professional links.” Honestly, this is the best response for the question at hand. What I’ve learned from this response is the need to research who I am, and how I perceive myself is how others will. And in this case if I see more leisure sites than professional, others will this see this, and If i see this as a negative, others will mostly likely see it in the same sense. through this I can develop my digital foot print.

The next step consisted of trying to get one of my more professional links to the top of the list. I choose to try to get my WordPress blog to the number on spot.

I kept a small journal about what I did, to accomplish this goal: https://evinlachance.wordpress.com/2010/09/23/trying-to-be-first/

From this process I learned that when dealing with Google the more hits you get on your site the higher it will go on your list. I have also learned that meta tags will help optimize the selection process, if I link to that site from other sites it will become more popular, and if I tag keywords into my blogs such as evin & lachance. These seem to have worked for me cause if you plug-in evin lachance in Google my WordPress blog will appear first. Ahh sweet success 🙂

Over I feel this experience was well worth it. I learned about my digital footprint, how I should look at it, and how I can manipulate it.

Luckily I have a name that is not common so I did appear first on my Google page.

When the assignment to get one of your links to the top of the Google search was presented I wanted to participate even though I didn’t have to! Going over my digital footprint and the site that I’ve chosen to make my new number one link is… dum du dum My WordPress site. I think by having this one at the top it will set me up for a more professional online identity because this site is based on research for my courses and will also allow others to read about topics based on me with New Media.

I have tried to remember most of the ways that we discussed in class and now I am attempt them and see what turns out. What I have done thus far in order to get my WordPress to the number one spot:

i) I set up a Google meta link – to tell you the truth I have no idea if it is going to do anything
ii) In every one of of my posts I have made my name evin lachance, or just evin, or lachance into a category and/or tag. I hope that when someone types my name they will be able to find at least one post I’ve made here.
iii) I have changed the name of my blog to include my own name.
iv) I have also set up a Google Analytic viewer for my WordPress. Hopefully that will draw some attention.

… more will be updated later

Recently I have been asked to start understanding my digital identity, make it more effective so that people using my name and select key words can search and follow me on social media networks. I am already part of many social sites such as facebook, myspace, twitter, etc., but to gain new social ground I have started up a Flickr account (link here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/itsevinlachance/). Through the course at Ryerson I will be constantly updating it in order to show growth and gain a social following. I am also planning on creating an image arts website through my program and hopefully making that the first link to appear on search engine when my name is searched. I also plan to go through all my profiles changing names to my actual name. I feel that with this plan I can expand my digital foot print and become more professional.

1) Currently my digital footprint is more expanded than I had realized. I am the type of person that posts things online and doesn’t think about what my actual data trail is. It seems the more personal I get the more public it is. Starting this project I was a little concerned to what I would find but as I got into it some of the links that appeared for the most part were positive. Starting the process I checked out three major sites: Google.ca, pipl.com, and 123People.com. All of the sites did find my name and gave a few links to my digital trail. Mostly they consisted of Facebook, Myspace, school events, Twitter, and also a few volunteer newsletters that had my name in them.

I would first like to discuss what social networks I am part of and which ones came up or did not. I am part of Deviant Art, Facebook, Myspace, Tumblr, Twitter,Youtube, and Piczo (which I created in gr. 10).

Came up
Facebook
Myspace
Twitter
Deviant Art
Piczo

Did not Show
Tumblr
Youtube

Here are a few links for the websites I checked:
Pipl.com: http://pipl.com/search/?FirstName=Evin&LastName=Lachance&City=Oshawa&State=ON&Country=CA&CategoryID=2&Interface=1
123people.com: http://www.123people.ca/s/evin+lachance
Google.ca: http://www.google.ca/search?q=Evin+Lachance&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

My digital foot describes me as more of a ‘social networker’, being in sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace. Personally I know I used them for that sole purpose. As you continue through my profiles, you can see my community volunteering at Rogers Television, my class play that was documented, and also another article titled “faces of the future” that I was featured in during my grade 12 year. I feel these links will dynamically show who I am, to people who are searching my name. Portfolio wise people can see some of my work through Deviant Art. I post regularly so this is a good place to see my up to date completed projects. Piczo.com is the only site that I feel uncomfortable by. It was created in grade 10 and has dated information and pictures. Regrettably I have forgotten what the password and email are and cannot access the editor to change it all. In any case though I can find the silver lining. I can see that if a person was to look at my profile they could see where I came from; how I started. It also exhibits an almost juvenile idea of how I used design layouts, which in turn can display a process, like in a portfolio.

Overall I am happy with my digital footprint. I feel that it says that I am currently up to date with today’s social networking sites. Its shows that I have been involved with my community, school, and my likes/dislikes, and it also displays art pieces that I have created. Though I don’t find it as professional as I would like it but I have time to work on it.

2) Question: Would you want an employer or teacher to see that? What do you want it to show and say?

The answer to that question in my experience and opinion is of mixed feelings. Currently at this sate in time I had never even considered my digital foot print. Yes I have looked for name on Google but I had never thought that people would be searching for me in order to get to know me. The fairest answer I can give is no, the condition my digital footprint is now I would not want an employer or teacher to see it. I feel that I need time to develop my digital footprint, and at this state I have more social leisure links than professional ones. If a person were to search for me I would rather have more professional links.
In time I would like for everyone searching my name to see how professional I am. Once I feel my digital footprint is up to date, I would like it to show that I have experience in many fields of design and media, that I am activity within the design community, and that I have progressed throughout my years.
